Natural Areas in Portland

Back on the Fourth of July I had a great canoe trip with a friend out at Smith and Bybee Lakes in North Portland. I've been birding on land there many many times but meeting someone with a boat has opened up a whole new world! The day was a typical cloudy Portland Fourth of July but a good time was had by all. I do love a canoe.

Today I headed up to Powell Butte with two friends in search of Lazuli Buntings. I love this butte, one of several in the Portland area, because of its grassland habitat surrounded by mixed forest. We saw upwards of 30 species of birds in just a few hours. And yes, we did nab that Bunting (though some of us wish they had been a little closer). You can see more photos and details here

Glad I found your blog about the Portland natural areas. Keep the pics and information coming, it is really great to see other lesser-known areas of the U.S.!
