Fern Hill Wetlands on a more pleasant dayI led my first session of Beginning Birding 2 today at Fern Hill Wetlands in Forest Grove. The weather was not cooperative; rain showers came and went, wind whipped us around. Twelve hardy souls bore the weather to attend but we ended early after the wind really picked up. I was perfectly comfortable under my many layers but not all were as snug. I didn't take any photos but here's our pretty decent list of 29 species:
Double-crested Cormorant
Great Blue Heron
Great Egret
Canada Goose
Tundra Swan (1 pair)
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Mallard
Green-winged Teal
Canvasback (1 pair)
Ring-necked Duck
Bufflehead (two males doing head bobbing displays to two females)
Bald Eagle
American Coot
Killdeer (nest in the middle of the road)
Wilson's Snipe (flew across road then skittered into grass where we could just barely see it)
Mourning Dove
Rufous Hummingbird (quick look at a male)
Western Scrub Jay
Tree Swallow (a few individuals)
Violet-green Swallow (dozens!)
Marsh Wren
American Robin
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Song Sparrow
Golden-crowned Sparrow
Red-winged Blackbird
Brewer's Blackbird
House Finch
Both sessions of the class are full for this year but I will mostly likely offer it again in 2009 or later in 2008 if my schedule allows. Our next two trips will be to the Tualatin NWR and to Baskett Slough NWR. I'll post lists and maybe photos if the weather improves!

We keep reading about you and your trips in the Warbler but we can never seem to get our schedules to match. One of these days we will definitely take one of your bird hikes. I'm sure we could learn a ton.
